According to recent reports, FIFA is reportedly exploring the possibility of asking U.S. President Donald Trump to scale back immigration enforcement operations during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While there is no official confirmation that a formal request has been made, discussions behind the scenes suggest the idea is being seriously considered.
The concern comes amid increased activity by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during Trump’s second term, with enforcement operations taking place in major cities across the country. Some of those actions have sparked protests and public unrest, raising concerns about how a heavy immigration enforcement presence could affect one of the world’s largest sporting events.
Officials have previously stated that federal agents may be involved in security efforts surrounding World Cup matches. With the 2026 tournament set to be the biggest in FIFA history featuring 48 national teams and millions of fans traveling across the United States concerns over enforcement activity have only grown.
Members of Congress, labor groups, and even stadium workers in host cities like Los Angeles have voiced worries about ICE operations during the competition. International football federations, particularly in Europe, are also reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
At first, discussions were said to focus on limiting immigration operations in host cities. However, because teams and supporters will be traveling nationwide throughout the tournament, broader pauses in enforcement have reportedly entered the conversation.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will run from June 11 through July 19, and FIFA’s close relationship with the White House could play an important role in whether any accommodation is made.
As the tournament approaches, one major question remains: will immigration enforcement continue as usual or will the World Cup lead to a temporary shift in policy?
